Windcave 3-D Secure Update: Mandatory Cardholder Email or Phone Requirements
Overview
Windcave has announced changes to their 3-D Secure (3DS) authentication requirements. To comply with updated Visa rules, all authentication requests must now include either:
- Cardholder Email Address, or
- Cardholder Phone Number
If your payment form does not collect at least one of these fields, Windcave will reject the transaction, resulting in failed payments.
Â
Windcave Notification
Windcave has communicated the following update to merchants:

The notice confirms that Visa requires merchants to pass Cardholder Email or Cardholder Phone into the 3DS authentication request. Windcave can no longer process 3DS transactions without one of these fields.

What You Must Do in Payments2Us
To prevent transaction failures, ensure your Payments2Us credit card forms collect at least one of the required fields:
- Mobile Phone
Recommendation: Make Email mandatory on all Windcave credit card payment forms.
Steps in Payments2Us
-
Open your Payment Form Builder
Open the Payment Form used for credit card donations or transactions. -
Ensure Email and/or Mobile Phone fields are present
If missing, add the required field to the form. -
Make at least one field mandatory
Edit the field → enable Required. - Save and Publish the form.
Â
Will This Affect Existing Donors?
Yes. If your existing forms allow anonymous or minimal-contact payments, transactions may fail during the 3DS check. Updating your form now ensures uninterrupted payments.
Â
Do Payments2Us Users Need to Update Anything Else?
At this stage, the key change is ensuring Email or Mobile Phone is collected on every Windcave credit card form. Payments2Us does not need to provide an app update for this change — it is handled through the fields configured on your forms.
Â
Summary
- Windcave now requires Email or Mobile Phone for all 3DS transactions.
- Payments will fail if neither field is collected.
- Update your Payments2Us payment forms to make one of these fields mandatory.
