When a donor contacts you to stop their regular giving, it’s important to understand the reason behind their request. Sometimes, the donor may be experiencing temporary financial challenges but still wishes to continue supporting your cause in the future.
In such cases, instead of cancelling the recurring payment entirely, you can pause (put on hold) the regular gift for a period of time. This allows the donor to resume their support later without needing to re-set up their payment details.
Option 1: Pause the Recurring Payment or put recurring payment on hold (Recommended)
If you would like to PAUSE the recurring payment instead, please see this article.
Tip: Encouraging donors to pause rather than cancel can help maintain long-term relationships and make it easier for them to resume giving when their circumstances improve.
Option 2: To Cancel / End a recurring payment.
Goto the recurring payment record and click edit. Then make the following changes:
- Status field update to ‘Inactive’
- 'Next payment date' field blanked out
- 'Payment after next payment date' field blanked out
Click ‘save’.
This will prevent the recurring payment from any further charges/ accidental charges that could come from it matching the criteria for the recurring payment to charge.
